esports betting New Jersey

Did you know the League of Legends Worlds Championship Finals is this weekend? Did you know that you can bet on eSports this weekend in New Jersey?!?

On Sunday, November 10th at 7AM EST, (12-noon local time in Paris, France) at AccorHotels Arena will be the ninth League of Legends World Championship Finals.

For the first time, according to Fanbyte, bettors located in New Jersey will be able to bet on the finals thanks to a one-time permission grant from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.

NJDGE Approves 1x eSports Betting in NJ

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE) has granted an one-time permission for New Jersey sportsbooks to offer and take bets on the LoL Worlds this year. There are a few rules, though:

  1. A user cannot bet more than $1,000.
  2. Bets cannot be made or taken after gameplay begins. This is due to the lack of live odds in League of Legends.
  3. New Jersey only.
  4. Must be 21 years of age or older

There has not been eSports betting in New Jersey due to a part of a rule where players in eSports events have to be 18 years of age or older. Sportsbooks haven’t taken bets on eSports due to this.

International eSports Betting

Overseas, eSports is one of the more popular betting markets available and most are run in countries where there aren’t much regulation in the betting and gambling industries. International eSports is a massive industry, with popular eSports teams being sponsored in events, having merchandising deals, and more. League of Legends is just one of the games that is played and gambled on regularly in the eSports industry.

With the US being in the “gold rush” period of sports betting and gambling, it will take a bit of time for the eSports market to be realized as a huge betting market. You have been able to play Daily Fantasy eSports on DraftKings in the past, but the prize pools were very small.

Where Can I Bet on League of Legends in New Jersey?

Given this one-time permission grant, do not expect all of the sportsbooks to offer League of Legends World Championship betting.

If any, we can expect DraftKings Sportsbook to offer it, however. With the company offering League of Legends as a daily fantasy product, DraftKings Sportsbook has been familiar and has the infrastructure to offer these bets on short notice. Given the aggressiveness of the sportsbook since the start of betting in New Jersey, DraftKings makes the most sense.

In addition, DraftKings Sportsbook has a section on eSports in their help section of the website that states terms and conditions. Sign of things to come? Just preparation? Either way, they look ready.

Keep an eye out for the odds, as you will have limited time to bet on the League of Legends World Championship on DraftKings Sportsbook.
