The Meadowlands Racetrack officially announced it will open its doors to sports betting beginning Sunday July 14th. It’s interesting timing to say the least, as they could have waited another six weeks to open up right ahead of College Football/NFL Week 1, and the MLB All Star Break is the week of the 16th. Nonetheless, they will be open for business in just three weeks.
New Jersey has already seen Monmouth Racetrack accept in-house betting since Governor Murphy signed the bill to put the Sports Betting law into effect. DraftKings sportsbook is said to be imminent after their deal with the Kambi Group. Along with the Borgata Sportsbook, the Meadowlands Sportsbook will be the 4th location t bet on sports in NJ. Jeff Gural, the manager of the Meadowlands Racetrack said:
“New York did me such a favor by not passing sports betting”, adding “That leaves me the entirety of New York City, Westchester, and Long Island. There are over 15 million people living within a 20 mile radius of the Meadowlands”.
Business should be booming from day one in the Meadowlands, and with an NFL Home Game virtually every Sunday during the season, there should be no slowing down throughout the year. Who needs pregaming in the Meadowlands parking lots when you have a sportsbook accepting live betting right across the parking lot?
The Meadowlands believe it or not had been struggling. Of course, the Devils and Nets both left the IZOD Center, ultimately leading to its closing in 2015. Sure, the Jets and Giants are at MetLife, a stadium that maintains plenty of offseason business as well, and set to host Wrestlemania next April, as well as World Cup games in 2026, but the rest of the facility never quite came to be what the state had envisioned. Plans to build a casino on site never came to fruition, and the racetracks business had been declining as well. There is a belief that sports betting could be the last ditch effort to keep the Meadowlands Track in business, and it couldn’t come at a better time. The biggest news here is the convenience of those in NYC, Westchester, and Long Island, making the trip over the George Washington and Tappan Zee Bridges to add to its revenue and taxes.
I’ll be making the trip over on July 14th to place some bets myself, and will have more on this development then.
