NBA Free Agency Impact on Odds

An unpredictable end to the NBA season seeing the Toronto Raptors become NBA Finals Champions, lead into a wild NBA free agency period that has changed the landscape of the league heading into the 2019-2020 season.

The NBA Champion odds have changed swiftly with each signing, as the top-five (Clippers, Laker, Bucks, 76ers and Warriors), or the cream of the crop in the NBA is going through many iterations of itself.

Most notably, the top-five does not even include teams like the Celtics, who brought in Kemba Walker to replace Kyrie Irving or the Brooklyn Nets who brought in Kevin Durant, who is coming off what could be considered a death-knell injury to an athlete, Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan.

Picking the Clippers as the early favorites could be easy with Kawhi Leonard coming aboard and bringing in Paul George (who does need shoulder surgery). However, a Lakers team of LeBron James, Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins, Kyle Kuzma and Rajon Rondo could result in the battle for Los Angeles when it comes to the Western Conference Finals.

The Milwaukee Bucks did not do much, but by virtue of being in the East and having Giannis Antetokounmpo, they’ll be in the hunt with a 50+ win season.

After a season that did fall short in terms of expectations, the 76ers did add Al Horford and Jason Richardson, adding to a young and talented team. However, when it’s all said and done, they’ll have difficulty getting past teams like the Celtics, Bucks and even the Nets could give them a run for the money, even without Kevin Durant for this upcoming season.

Lastly, we have to discuss the Warriors. They’ve lost Kevin Durant to the Nets, Cousins to the Lakers and Klay Thompson tore his ACL in the NBA Finals. However, with loss comes gain. They brought in DeAngelo Russell to add to Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.

The Warriors will definitely be in the conversation, but it’s tough to imagine them competing with so many heavyweights. It seems their time in the spotlight is fading.

NBA Champion Prediction 2020

When it comes down to it, I’m just not one to pass on the Lakers, even with an aging Lebron James. Adding Anthony Davis and Boogie Cousins along with Kuzma is simply a loaded team, even against the Clippers Leonard and George.

The duo of Davis and Cousins on the floor at the same time, with James who basically plays all five positions at once, may just be too much for Leonard and the Clippers when it is all said and done.

Lay the money on the Lakers to win the 2020 NBA Finals!
